As an iPhone user, it can be said that I have grown with the growth of iPhone, including its rear camera. With deep use in iPhone camera, I gradually found that the built-in camera function of the iPhone is actually far more than just pressing the shutter. It also has a lot of powerful functions that have not yet been widely used by the public. Sometimes I’m too lazy to bring a camera when I am out, but I can also use my iPhone to shoot masterpieces. Below are my 9 practical tips to improve your iPhone Photo Skill.
#1 Turn on the grid to balance your shot
Enable "Grid" on Settings > Photos & Cameras to switch on the grid.
Grid is helpful for better composition, especially for shooting buildings. With the help of grid, you can easily align the lines of building or the horizon.
#2 Use exposure correctly
A great advantage of shooting with an iPhone is that you can directly touch the screen and drag the "sun" to adjust exposure. Learning how to use exposure correctly allows you to take many incredible photos, especially silhouettes photos.
It is very simple to shoot a silhouette photo. Face the light source and slightly drag down the "sun" to reduce exposure on the subject. Then shoot the subject against the light to get the silhouette effect.
#3 Turn on Live Photo to shoot long exposure photos
Turn on Live Photo, your photo is no longer a still photo, but a dynamic picture containing a few seconds before and after you press the shutter. In this mode, you can filter the dynamic photos in the "Edit" section, and select satisfactory still photos from all the actions taken in the live photo. This feature is especially suitable for shooting children and small animals.
There is another cool thing in Live Photo. Update your iPhone to iOS 11 or later, then swipe up the live photo you taken just now to bring up "Effect" panel. Choose "Long Exposure" to mix all moments in live photo into one still photo. This effect is especially suitable for waterfall, traffic flow, star trails, etc.
#4 Use square composition
What scenes are square composition suitable for:
1. Gourmet
2. Symmetrical building
3. Or make full use the square diagonal, you can take pictures like this:
#5 Make use of portrait mode
It goes without saying that the portrait mode is used to shoot people. The background blur and focus are not too problematic. The large aperture is comparable to a camera.
#6 Keep your photos simple
New photographers often overcomplicate their photos. But too many details distract the viewer. A busy scene makes it hard to create a beautiful composition. One interesting subject is all you need to take great pictures. It’s easier to create a strong composition when your picture only has one subject.
Click "2X" right by the main camera to zoom in the subject to make composition simple.
#7 Shoot from a lower angle
Most people take iPhone photos from chest height. This is usually the most convenient way of taking a picture. But there are usually more creative options and different perspectives for taking great photos.
Click "0.5X" left by the main camera and squat down.
#8 Keep on shooting
Insist on shooting and make taking photos as a part of life. Shooting the same object or scene is very effective for improving shooting skills, because different weather, different light, different people, etc. will make them change.
#9 Don't be afraid on post optimization
Optimize iPhone photo by alignment, cropping, adding filters or advanced post enhancement. There are various apps for iPhone photo effects to help you make your photos become masterpieces on your iPhone. Or you can take advantage of Photoshop (for professionals) or Leawo PhotoIns (for beginners) for advanced photo enhancement.
Finally, I hope all of you can take satisfactory photos, but I also hope you won't miss the good times when taking photos.
