Recently, there has been a lot of noise about whether the Spring Festival is called Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year. Obviously, the Spring Festival and Chinese New Year are widely accepted around the world. Just when Chinese are enjoying Chinese New Year, Koreans came out and pointed out that there is not only China that celebrates "Lunar New Year", but Koreans also have their own "Korean New Year". And they strongly required that it should be called Lunar New Year instead of Chinese New Year. So, what is the difference between Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year? Let's check it out.
What is the Difference Between Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year?
There are many countries in the world that celebrate Lunar New Year, such as South Korea and Vietnam, but not all of them are the same day. In other words, each country has its own Lunar calendar, which means that the Lunar New Year is a large range, so it is imprecise to call Chinese New Year as Lunar New Year. Lunar stands for moon (yin) in English, while solar stands for sun (yang). Chinese lunar calendar combines solar calendar and lunar calendar. (lunar + solar = lunisolar calendar) Although the origins and celebration dates of Korean New Year and Chinese New Year are the same, there are essential differences. If you ask deeper, it is difference between two countries.
In fact, you will find many similar festivals and similar dishes in East Asia, but if you have learnt Asian history, you will find that they are actually derivatives of Chinese culture. It is not surprising that countries surround China like Korea and Vietnam have similar festivals and costumes, because they were subsidiary countries of China hundreds years ago.
As a neighboring country of China, Japan also has had very close exchanges with China, but they do not shy away from having Chinese culture in their own culture. For example, you can see Chinese characters anywhere in Japan. The Korean and Vietnamese languages you see now are actually the products of these decades. They still used Chinese characters decades ago. This is not to against them, but I think they should not take Chinese culture as their own, which exactly shows that they lack confidence in their own culture.
Back to the topic, it is not wrong for Koreans to call their own Spring Festival the Korean New Year, but they should not correct the Chinese and people around the world and say it is Lunar New Year. It is absolutely incorrect. Chinese New Year, as Chinese traditional festival, should be called Chinese New Year, which is beyond doubt.
