Is Galaxy Buds Pro a Challenger to AirPods Pro? Full Review of Galaxy Buds Pro

The Galaxy Buds series is a product line of Samsung's true wireless earphone. Galaxy Buds, Buds+ and Buds Live are the previous released products before Buds Pro. Among them, Buds Live is the first earphone that equipped with noise cancelling function in Galaxy Buds product line, but the shape of it is unique - neither in-ear nor flat-ear, which makes it difficult to achieve a well-sealed wearing. Therefore, its performance of passive and active noise cancelling are greatly affected. In January of this year, the Galaxy Buds Pro was officially released, and this is another new earphone that equipped with active noise cancelling technology. How about its performance? Is it a qualified AirPods Pro alternative? And is it a challenger to AirPods Pro? Let's check it out.

Galaxy Buds Pro abandoned the cashew shape of Buds Live and returned to the Buds+ design. The size is similar to Buds+, and the weight is also similar. But there are still many changes in the shape. The small ear wing design of Buds+ is integrated into the shape, and the part of the inner ear shell that fits the concha cavity is designed to be more convex. Compared with the official product map, this difference will be more obvious.

The more convex inner side will bring more obvious "compatibility" problems. For the appropriate ear shape, it can increase the comfort and sealing. For the crowd, the raised inner side will bring a more obvious feeling of topping, and it will also affect the firmness of the headset. From our actual experience, Buds Pro is indeed easier to loosen when wearing, which causes sound leakage. In terms of wearing comfort and reliability, our experience is considered to be a step backwards than Buds+.

Buds Pro uses a dual-moving-coil speaker design, one with a diameter of 6.5 mm is responsible for the treble, and the other with a diameter of 11 mm is responsible for the bass. The official did not introduce how to divide the frequency, but according to the official structure diagram, the speakers should be coaxially arranged front and rear. In front of the speaker is a feedback microphone, behind the speaker is a button battery, and then the motherboard. There are two microphones on the inner layer of the motherboard to pick up noise and voice.

Samsung official says that the battery life of Buds Pro is 5+13 when ANC is turned on, and 8+20 when ANC is turned off. After 8 hours of test, its remaining battery life 5%. It supports fast charging in the box, and the battery box also supports QI wireless charging. Buds Pro supports 4 levels of ambient volume control which is the transparent mode, two levels of active noise reduction, plus the deactivation of noise reduction, for a total of seven levels. Among them, the noise reduction mode can only be activated by wearing two headphones, and it will not activate if it is not worn properly.

The active noise cancelling is divided into two levels, high and low. Through the comparison, it can be seen that the ANC of Buds Pro in the 20-500Hz and 20-1000Hz frequency bands is slightly better than that of Bose QuietComfort Earbuds, and the performance of 20-2000Hz is relatively inferior. , But did not significantly widen the gap. With higher frequency noise cancelling, the advantages of QuietComfort Earbuds expand. This result is not surprising. The volume of QuietComfort Earbuds and the 28-hole pickup holes will have some inherent advantages. Buds Pro has achieved such a performance and has shown its technical strength very well.

For call noise reduction, we simulated indoor scenes of 40dB, white noise of 80dB, noisy human voices of around 75dB, and public places with traffic noise, as well as live tests. In a noise environment of 75dB and 80dB, Buds Pro will significantly amplify the speech gain, and is excellent in eliminating constant background noise. Sudden noise requires a response time of about 0.5-1 second. Speech processing will have obvious swallowing or cold sounds, which sometimes affects semantic understanding. In contrast, the call quality of QuietComfort Earbuds is better.

Sound by AKG is one of Buds Pro's selling points. Since AKG became Samsung's company, AKG has been reused by Samsung. And Samsung has also begun to talk about sound quality under the name of AKG. First comes to the performance of the bass part. Compared with Buds+, the bass of Buds Pro is indeed less, which is closer to reality, but it is still slightly more. In 6k~8kHz, Buds Pro is indeed more than Buds+, but it is not too much. The main problem of Buds Pro compared to Buds+ is the vocal part, to be more precise, it is the performance of the vocal in the middle and high frequencies. Some of Buds Pro's vocals will be prominent in the mid-range, it is not the vocals, but a part of the vocals. Sometimes it seems a bit redundant. So overall, the sound quality of Buds Pro is slightly degraded compared to Buds+.

Compared to AirPods Pro. Even with the latest firmware, vocals in some frequency of Apple AirPods Pro are still slightly dim or not bright enough. In the bass part, Apple's sense of volume will be less than that of Buds Pro, which is closer to reality. The volume of UHF instruments is slightly less, while Buds Pro is more. As long as you can wear them safely, both earplugs sound good. This is definitely a priority, but in terms of sound quality, I prefer the sound and bass response of the Galaxy Bud Pro. You can also manually adjust the equalizer in the Galaxy Wearable app to a variety of different presets, from bass enhancement to softness.

Both earphones have there strengths and weaknesses, but the best earphones for you will finally depend on what software ecosystem you're in. This time your phone will be a big factor in your decision. If you are an Android user, choose Galaxy Buds Pro, if you are an iPhone user, choose AirPods Pro. For iPhone users, Galaxy Buds Pro isn't a challenger, because the ecosystem of Apple devices is all-round, and you can enjoy full experience when all your devices are from Apple. But I will still choose Galaxy Buds Pro, because I prefer better sound quality and more unique design. How will you choose between Galaxy Buds Pro and AirPods Pro? Please let us know!
